Interviewer: Why is a thicker conductor necessary to carry a current in
A.C.as compared to D.C. ?
Candidate : An AC current goes up and down (drawing a sinusoid) and
requires more space inside the wire, so the wire has to be thicker.

External (to student) : "Why does a capacitor block DC but allow AC To
pass through ?
Student: See, a capacitor is like this ---| |--- , OK. DC comes
straight, like this ----------, and the capacitor stops it. But AC,goes UP,
DOWN, UP DOWN and jumps right over the capacitor!" -------------------
good one : - )

Interviewer: How will you tell if that wall outlet carries AC or DC?
Candidate: I will put my finger in. If it is pushed away, it is AC. If
it gets stuck, it was DC.

Interviewer: How will you reverse direction of an Induction motor?
Candidate: I will remove the four bolts at the x-ud, turn the motor
around, and put back the bolts.

Interviewer: How do you start a synchronous motor?
Candidate: Vrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (in rising pitch)
Interviewer: Stop! Stop!
Candidate: rrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (in falling pitch)

Examiner: "What is a step-up transformer?"
Student: "A transformer that is put on top of electric poles."
Examiner (smiling): "And then what is a step-down transformer?"
Student (hesitantly):"Uh - A transformer that is put in the x-udment or
in a pit?"
Examiner (pouncing): "Then what do you call a transformer that is
installed on the ground?"
(Student knows he is caught-can't answer )
Examiner (impatiently): "Well?"
Student (triumphantly): "A stepless transformer, sir!"

One question of electrical i still remember no one ever could answer in first year viva was what is a three phase power

It went something like this

T: So dear x, you are smart guy..
X:
T: Turn on the fan speed, its hot, Garmi lag rhi hogi
X: (wah aaj Viva nikal gya maze se thinking)
T: What is the phase of that power
X: err 1phase?
T: What if i connect 3 phase supply
X Dunno Sir its 1 phase, what can 3 phase do.
T o i can't do that. But have you seen, outside this hall, our meter is 3 phase
X: (Arre am not an electrician ) Dunno sir
T: Why not make 5phases. Whats with 3 phases
X: Good question
T: Why do motors need 3 phases
X: Gyaan on even power
T: So i can make 100 phase supply for very even power output
X: Won't make too much of a diffence i think after some stage
T: So you decided that 3 is enough and not more
X: ehh.. no, scientists must have
T: Who are these guys who decide whats good or not anyway. Americans think 3 is good enough, why can't it be 5. I like the number 5

T: So we can same way decide that marks should be out of 60%

T: Why not, who said it has to be 100% only. We can do what we like. 5 phase power, 60% marks.

T: So you can go and we can safely assume that when you become an engineer you will make 5 phase power standard for india.
