"Worms Meets Age of Empires"
Ever since the series launched back in 1994, Worms has had a special place in the hearts of many gamers. In its eleven year history the game hasn’t changed all that much, although it got a major 3D reworking last year (in ‘Worms 3D’). Team 17 released a sequel, Worms Forts : Under Siege on PS2 and PC this year and this is the mobile iteration. Featuring classic Worms gameplay with a new twist - buildings are now a major part of the game. Build forts, towers and strongholds to your heart's content. These can be used for anything from having a larger range of weapons to protecting your territory. And while the game doesn't quite live up to it's glory days on PC, it's a solid version of a classic game.
One major complaint gamers had on the original mobile Worms game was that there was no jumping available. Fortunately this has been fixed in Worms Forts, and players can now jump around the course as much as they see fit. Also included are more weapons (including the unforgettable holy hand grenade), more levels and more forts! One question stands out, though - how big an effect do the forts have on the gameplay? Well it turns out that just about every second turn players are, instead of firing their bazookas, building a stronghold to protect themselves. This does slow play down a lot, but also adds an element of strategy not seen before in the Worms games. For those new to the Worms games, and I'm sure there aren't many of you, Worms is a war like game involving two opposing teams whose aim is to blast the other team with as many oversized and exaggerated weapons as possible. And oh yes - all your troops are worms! In this game, there is the added challenge of having at least one building standing.
The game's graphics of Worms Forts manage to keep the
fun style of the original, although there are some aspects that could have been improved. The backgrounds are plain and undetailed, and the terrains themselves are often bland and uninteresting however the animations are admirable and the large, unwieldy weapons are well represented. On the whole, the game recreates the cartoony look of the game although technically graphically it isn't all that impressive.
As far as sound goes, the game does a fairly competent job. An upbeat, war-like tune plays throughout the main menus, but the game itself doesn't feature any music. What it does feature, is some nifty sound effects that play for certain actions. While these are just simple beeps and boops, they're still a step above many of the other games that I've played - which, during the game, are mute always.
In conclusion, Worms Forts is a great game recommended for action fans of strategy games. There is no need for experience when it comes to the series, as a great help document is included within the game. So whether or not the name 'Worms' means to you a classic series or small, earth digging critters, it's great
fun for anybody. The series just keeps getting better and better!
