Storyline
As known Guru is the story of the visionary Dhirubhai Ambani's journey from nothing to having the multi billion industry and the man who put India on the Forbes list. Mani Ratnam who wrote the story, screenplay and directed the movie does full justice to the story of the great man.
GuruKant Desai [ Abhishek Bacchan] is the son of the headmaster of a small village and does not like to study, so when he gets a job in turkey through his uncle, he takes it up and goes off to turkey at a small age. in turkey the small kid grows up to be a smart and intelligent guy and learns the tricks of the trade. After he has enough money, he dumps the job, a big promotion alongwith and returns home to his village to do business.
On his way to the village he happens to bump into sujata[aishwarya rai] and as a chance meet just moves on. After reaching the village, his parents are happy to see him, but once they learn that he decided to do business here, his father gets angry and tells him that he wont be a part of it in any ways.
Now Abhishek wants money to start of business, and in order to get that money he agrees to marry his friend's elder sister. He makes his friend partner in his business and moves on to the city with the two to start a bsiness in clothing.
From here on starts the journy of Gurukant's sucess, due to his intelligence and high dreams, he becomes friends with every one he meets and everyone starts calling him guru bhai out of respect. It is here he meets Manikdas Gupta[ Mithun] the editor of newspaper "Independent" who beleives in printing only the truth and takes manikdas as a father figure alongwith manikdas's grand daughter Meenu [ Vidya Balan] who cannot move due to a diesease.
In abscence of Manikdas, guru uses his newspaper as a means to destroy his enemy company. On return and knowing this manikdas gets furious and alongwith the reporter shyam[ madvan] decides to bring forth the truth about Guru and his ways of earning money and how he has increased corruption in the country. The battle between guru and the media grows as more and more is known, till there is a slew of cases on guru and his company. How Guru gets out of this mess leads to one of the best endings of a movie i have ever seen.
Direction
The direction is flawless, Maniratnam is one of the best directors India has, and he proves it again with Guru. he captures the emotions of his charcters as well as showing the beautiful scenery in background of places i wish i knew.
Screenplay
Abhishek has gone to an all new level of acting and performs his part amazingly. The role of a young energetic boy to a smart, cunning old man is played by him perfectly. Aishwarya does her part of supporting wife particularly well, nd its after a long time she has acted well. Vidya Balan, madhvan, Mithun all have well defined roles which they do perfect justice to. i wouldn't change any character of the cast no matter what cause of the work they performed is just perfect for the character every1 played amazingly.
Storyline
The storyline is perfect, penned down really good alongwith great dialogues, the only problem i saw here was ,that there were few songs pushe in just to keep the movie going on or maybe for commercial success, instead of those scenes the movie could have gone into a little more depth.
Music
The music of the movie is given by A.R Rehman and even though a couple of songs in the movie dont beloong, but the music is awesome, the songs just grow on you over time. The in movie music themes are also very well done.
Overall, guru is an amazing movie. It is a must must watch for every one, it is one of those movies that inspire you that you can do what you dream of eventually if you work hard enough.
9.99/10

Re: Guru Movie Review
Awesome movie indeed. Just saw it today its just a proof to the fact that Mani Ratnam makes movies with international appeal, serious flair and dedication. One of the finest movies churned out of bollywood. The only downer was that stupid song "Jodiyaa", the movie could have done without it. The script is great, direction better and its a powerhouse when it comes to acting. Abhishek Bacchan who i always thought was an overrated actor (being AB's son and what not) has proved beyond doubt that he is one of the finest. He makes it look easy portraying Gurukant Desai and brings with him a range of emotions and some of the most powerful histrionics and dialogues ever in a hindi movie. Aishwarya who can barely act and is pretty inconsistent has done a awesome job donning the garb of the carefree village belle to a responsible and supportive wife and mother. The supporting cast is pretty awesome as well. Mithun is back in form playing the newspaper editor. Madhvan and Vidya Balan turn their small roles into memorable ones. The cinematography was awesome and it effectively captures turkey, the 1950s Mumbai and Idar. All in all a must watch.
Rated: 8.5/10
-1 for that song and 0.5 for leaving some loose ends
PS: Vidya Balan's character has multiple sclerosis

Re: Guru Movie Review
I saw it yesterday, but am not so enthusiastic about it Maybe its because I saw a hindi film in a theater after a long time, but I found the songs where put in just to make A.R. Rahman a bit richer. And he's acted a bit lazy this time as he has used a bit of the background music from saathiya and turned it into a song.
Apart from the songs, the film is really very enjoyable But I really felt it should have been a bit longer. Maybe if mani had chopped of all the songs, he could have used that time to tie up some of the loose ends. Especially in the second half.
Madhavan's and Vidya's roles seemed heavily edited. Vidya in particular has nothing to do in the film. The couple of scenes showing the relationship betweeen madhavan and her really did nothing for the film.
I felt that the ending was too dumbed down. It should been much more complex, involving all legal and economic concepts ( something like a Jeffery Archer novel ) But then of course it wouldn't have appealed to the lowest common denominator. And I thought Mani made films for the thinking man.
While I felt abhishek's acting was overall very good, he simply was trying to ape his father. Specially in the last scene in the court. He talks and acts exactly like amitabh. This has not been seen in any of his other films.
All in all, if we remove the songs, I'll give this a 6/10.
P.S. - Mods please fix the spoiler tags

Re: Guru Movie Review
. Anymore complexity in the last scenes would have wreacked havoc in what was a particularly simple movie, you should probably remember that Chandrakant Desai was but a illiterate man so those complex scenes would have probably not even involved him. Other than that the complex ending would have killed the climax totally with slow proceedings. And yes Mani makes films for the thinking man but stop comparing hindi movies to hollywood man, besides if not for people like Mani we would all be watching trash like dhoom 2 and karan johar brand movies all year.
I agree about the loose ends though, songs can be done away with. Anyways to each his own
