Having heard about this film I had to essentially watch this film, being a self acclaimed horror/gore fan. I have watched some pretty gruesome films in my time, including the infamous Caligula, Beyond the Darkness, and various cannibal films like Cannibal holocaust, Cannibal ferox and likes. But none of them compare to the sheer horror instilled by Hostel.
The film starts off showing three friends Paxton (Jay Hernandez), Josh(Derek Richardson) and Oli(Eythor
Gudjonsson) on a backpacking trip to Europe in pursuit of hedonistic pleasure, where they meet the pimp
Alex(Lubomir Bukovy) in the sex and drugs capital city of the world - Amsterdam, who promises them an experience of a lifetime lying in eastern europe, stating the local flesh as trite. These three young men convinced by the promises, set off to the slovakian capital of Batislava.
Aboarding the train, they meet a strange dutch businessman who makes a peculiar entry and exit, but things seem pretty innocuous till now. The three friends reaching Batislava, reach for their boarding in the hostel, where they make a reservation earlier. They find out that they have gorgeous room partners - Natalya and Svetlana sharing their room. Things seem to work out for the three friends, who quickly cozy up to the girls, and go out with them for late night partying and have sex with them in the night.
Things start taking a really nasty turn from this point. They find out that their Icelandic friend Oli is missing in the morning, and seems to have mysteriously disappeared and has checked out of Hostel, without leaving them a note of his whereabouts. A short glimpse of his dismembered head is flashed, showing a dark gothic prison, which essentially is a torture house. The torture house gives you a deja vu of the prisons shown in the "Silent Hill" series of games.
The two american friends Josh and Paxton initially think of quitting the lodge but decide to hang out for a little longer,in the Hostel, not knowing what fate lies ahead for them.
After a few drinks in the night, Josh starts to feel ill, and heads back to the hostel, and ends up in the torture room the next morning, finding out that the friendly dutch businessman they meet earlier is not so friendly, and infact is a customer of the torture house. The torture house is essentially a "pay
and make your most perverse fantasies come true" institution, which charges different sums of money for victims of different nationalities.
The torture scenes in the movie are absolutely sick and make you almost throw up at times and leaves you in a daze where you wonder how much more sick can a human mind be ?
Paxton being lucky for the time being ends up in the store room of the discotheque, and gets out in the morning to find out that his friend Josh is missing. On his hunt, he stumbles upon Natalya and svetlana getting high in a dingy hotel room. Upon enquiry, he gets circumlocutary answers from them, and gets to know that their friends are in an "art museum". He forces Natalya to take him to this "art musuem".
He gets the shock of his life when he finds out the truth about the torture house, and finds himself as a prisoner over there.
Luckily Paxton manages to escape from his captivator, as the captivator stumbles upon the gag ball from paxton's mouth and cuts his own leg with the chainsaw the he had planned to use upon paxton. Having shot his captivator by a pistol lying on the table nearby, he manages an escape with 3 dismembered fingers.
A series of events follow where Paxton manages to escape from the Hostel after rescuing the Japanese girl yuki from torture room who has her eye disgouged by the torturer. Yuki commits suicide by throwing herself at a train on the trainstation, when she gets a glimpse of reflection of her disfigured face.
This is one of the scenes which will truly make you feel ill.
Paxton manages an escape to the train, but later finds out that the same dutch businessman is aboard the train, and decides to take his vengeance on him, and kills him gruesomely by cutting off his fingers and choking him.
This gruesome scene is paradoxically one of the moments which gives you a vicarious sense of revenge, with the dutchman getting his right deserts, along with the scene where Paxton kills Natalya, Svetlana and Alex on the road by running them over with a car.
The movie ends with showing Paxton leaving Batislava in a train.
