Ok let me put it subtely………….This movie F**king ownz !
Yeah now lets get to the review part. Peter Jackson takes the old King Kong plot turns it a bit upside down and turns it into a 3 hours thrill ride which will amaze, surprise, thrill, awe you and will make you want more! If Speilberg can make it Jackson can better it. I haven’t seen a better thrill ride movie since after the original Jurassic Park. Its basically starts with Carl Denham a struggling film maker who gets the boot from the financers and decides to make a movie of his own. Ann Darrow is a struggling theatre actress who’s theatre closes down and she is forced to seek out other places for work. Denham happens to come across her and convinces here to play the part. Ann Darrow played by the beautiful Naomi watts who also plays the love interest of the script writer Jack Driscoll (played by Adrien Brody). Together with the crew of a ship they set out to find a fabled island. In between the ship runs aground the skull island and the adventure starts. The island itself is strange. Seems like the place hasn’t evolved since the land of god. The place is filled with all sorts of prehistoric monsters which present various kinds of peril to the members of the crew and the movie team. To top it there are primitive people living on the island, who take Ann as hostage and offer her as sacrifice to appease the 25 foot Kong. What follows is a total roller coaster ride filled with moments of awe, wonder, thrill, sadness and sympathy.
It is clear from start that Jackson isn’t leaving any stone unturned in trying to film this Epic. The 40s Manhattan looks amazingly real and true to what one would expect. This movie would have been an average popcorn thriller had some one else directed it. The efforts in making the movie are painfully obvious all throughout. The direction is top notch as always. Jackson manages to capture everything right from the 40s Manhattan to the beautiful relationship shared between the primate and Ann rather beautifully. The actors are simply superb! Naomi watts handle a physically challenging role with ease. The scenes between her and the giant ape are simply great. Even with a virtual actor the actress handles every single scene beautifully. Adrian broody plays his part well but nothing special to mention about him. Jack black playing the iron willed movie crazy director is simply superb! The real actor however is the king of virtual acting, Andy Serkis who plays both Kong and Lumpy the cook. Serkis manages to capture the feelings, expressions of the King very well and blows life into an otherwise lifeless CG actor. On the emotional level the movie will touch you with the trails of the relationship shared by Ann and Kong and how it ultimately ends. Rest of the supporting cast play their parts well.
The CG of the movie is now at a level where it is really difficult to make out whats real and what computer generated. The whole island with the strange creatures is done beautifully. Kong is the best work of CG ever! The hide, his silvery man and the scar he bears from fights are done realistically. The movie has amongst the best sequences in movie history according to me. The brontosaurus herd stampede, the showdown between Kong and the T-rex, Kong wreaking havoc in Manhattan and the final showdown! The movie is watch able for these sequences alone. The WETA team deserves kudos for bringing those giants to life in such “jaw dropping awesomeness”. The sounds especially those of the primate and the creature that inhibit the island are superbly done.
In short Jackson has taken a classic and raised the bar high, way high. He shows that he isn’t a one film or one trilogy wonder but a true genius. If you want a thriller, its there. If you want a heart wrenching tale, its there. If you want good cinema worth your time and money and then some more…………it’s totally there. In short “GO WATCH IT”. This movie is not to be missed, film buffs or non filmi people, Hindi or English going audiences. a MUST watch.
