Omkara is based on William Shakespeare’s classic, Othello. Although it has been made by Hollywood around 4 times, it is the first time it has been made in Indian cinema, by Vishal Bhardwaj and he has done a fantastic job.
Omkara's Story starts in a backdrop of a little village, where Omkara leads a gang of henchmen, with his two main hands being Langda Tyagi and Kesu Firangi. The movie starts with Omkara kidnapping his lover Dolly on her wedding day.As Dolly's father comes to kill Onkara,he matter reaches BhaiShaab who tries to settle it between the tow and asks Dolly about her wish, and on her agreement gives them a go ahead to marry each other.
However due to it being an off season the marrige is postponed by 6 weeks. Dolly as having left her father's house moves over to Onkara's house and stays there. In the meantime Onkara and Bhaishaab who stood up in election, win it, and now he decides to give his nickname of BahuBali to one of his 2 henchmen. Langda who had been with him for 15yrs thinks he would get it, but Onkara gives it to Kesu instead. Although this makes Langda jealous and angry he does't show it, and plans how to get rid of Kesu.
From this point on, Langda plots everything in a way that Kesu gets in the wrong side of Onkara. The perfect way he finds is to show Onkara that Kesu and Dolly are having an affair.
How Langda makes Onkara belive in this affair, and the proof he gets towards the end, and the twist leading the final scene is what i better not spill out here.
Overall, I would say, its one hell of a movie, the best one i have got to see after Rang de Basanti. It portrays what happens in real life, and how jealousy and Lack of Trust can lead to big mistakes in life.
Although i must warn you that the language is extremly explicit, and take this very seriously that do not go for the movie with ur parents at all. Go with friends/wife/husband. Girlfriend only if she hasnt got any problem with explicit language
StoryLine
Absolutly beautiful. THe interpretation of and English novel into an India script has been done amazingly. A perfect story with an amazing endng.
Directon
Perfect. Direction is amazing, each scene has been thought of and then shot. The backdrop of the village, the expressions of various characters, and the locations have been very well directed to the last drop.
ScreenPlay
With a cast like this, screenplay is just awsome. Ajay Devgan gives one of his best performances. Konkana Sen, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu, although have small roles, but they are notable and are executed perfectly by each of the three.
Naseerudin Shah is as always brilliant, playing his role of a political leader who is in league with a henchmen gang leaves no scope of error.
Vivek Oberoi, although he plays his role quite nicely, but accordin to me he has overacted in quite a few shots and his role should have been played by someone else like Arshad Warsi or john abraham or Akshay Kumar.
The cream of the crop is Saif Ali Khan, as the psycotic jealous and cunning sidekick, he performs brilliantly, I cannot think of the role of Langda Tyagi being played by any 1 other than him.
All the other characters who even had little roles have been given enough screenspace and dialogues that they are noticable in the movie as a seperate character.
Cinematography
Its perfect, the sets, the locations the design of the houses, cars driven , bikes and hell even a small temple on a little hill, has been portrayed to perfection. The scenes shot have been taken brilliantly showing everything important in the scene, with the last shot of the movie though of the shot in a way that i cannot find words to portray how good the scene is.
Sound/ Music
The songs are put in at perfect timings, they dont seem out of the movie at any place, and mix well with the ongoing scenes.
The sound/ voice is what is going to make the movie a hit. The dialogues are simply astonishing, they are almost as if what you would hear in a little village in UP. And the sounds have been put up well, according to the backdrop of the village, and finally this is a movie where the sound of the guns being shot at sound decent, with the shell falling on the ground and the bullet's effect on hitting steel or glass or simply brick has been put in very nicely.
All in All, It is one of the best movies i have seen. I can almost term it to be one the classics of Indian Cinema. Every thing in the movie is perfect, just perfect.
Rating 10/10 [ I would have given 11/10 if i could]
A movie which should be watched either in a Theatre or on a DVD.
Dont miss this one at any cost.
