In India, we dont get such gems releasing as they dont have a commercial appeal. For that matter this movie did not do so well in the USA too.
This gem is directed by Joss whedon, whose other works include Buffy- the vampire, Angel. But Firefly must be easily his best work till date.
To cut the long story short, this movie is based on the sci fi series
FIREFLY. Like all the great scifi series, this was never beamed in India, and dont expect to be beamed.
Five hundred in years in future, Earth gets overpopulated and people start looking for alternative planets, eventually they find a galaxy far away with a star system similar to our solar system. Cut to the story, mankind has advanced to an extent, that it wants to purify into an "all good society" ( Allied forces). Some people obviously object citing they have a freedom of decision ( Independent Rebels , and you have a nasty race called "River".
I will not give spoilers in terms of storyline here, go grab a copy if you can and watch it, its a must see.
In terms of characterisation, we have some real fleshy characters here. Characters me and you can relate to, unlike some flicks with absurb characters fighting with laser swords
. Acting is also very good especially Nathan Fillon who plays the captain of the ship Serenity, and Summer Glau who is a child pschyic. There is some very good bonding between the characters.
In all I would have given this movie 100%, except for a few glitches, for people who have not watched firefly, might find the story advancing too fast in the first half. Of course what do you expect when you need to give an introduction which was 1 season long...
