So it becomes the right time to kick off the discussion regarding Indian presence, performance, perspective at the Games.
The Asian Games when started were dominated by India, but as Japan, Korea and later China grew stronger Indian laggend behind.
Now a days India Struggles to keep its place in top 10 while it used to be in top 3 earlier.
But this year the story may be different as the inclusion of sports like Chess, Cue Sports, Strong team in Shooting and a good buch of other players India is expected to play a good strong show in Doha.
Had it not beeen doping fiasco by Weighlifters it could have been much better story.

India forfeit the first game in the basketball schedule by not turning up on court at the appropriate time
India’s basketball team failed to turn up for their opening match at the Basketball Indoor Hall at Sport City today, 23 November.
India were not on court by the 12:00 start time and the referee awarded the match to opponents Bahrain, 20-0.
In what was a strange build-up to the match, players for the Kingdom of Bahrain enjoyed an extensive warm-up, where each player was individually introduced by the stadium announcer and took their positions on court prior to tip-off. The referee then blew his whistle to start the match, then immediately blew it again to end the ‘match’ then shook hands with the Bahraini players.
Afterwards, the Bahraini coach, Salman Ramadan stated that " It will be difficult for us tomorrow when we play Macau, China because we concentrated on beating India today. The boys are relaxed now and we will have to work hard to get the team up again.
"Macau, China are maybe not as good as India, but the Chinese are quick and organised. We have to be ready for them because they will give us a tough game."
In what was a bonus to the squad, the forfeited encounter allowed the players to enjoy a thorough training session afterwards as they acclimatised themselves to court conditions.
After the training session player Ahmed Al Mutawa said about the non-encounter " We've been scouting India for a month and were looking forward to playing them, but we'll take the win. It was good to practice in the hall, but we would rather have played the game."
The second match of round 1 of the competition, Mongolia against Uzbekistan, is scheduled to start at 14:15 today, followed by Afghanistan against Hong Kong, China at 16:30 and the local derby, UAE against Kuwait, at 18:45.

India withdraws more teams
India’s Olympic Association (IOA) announced today, 24 November that it has withdrawn more teams from sports in the 15th Asian Games.
In addition to the men’s basketball team which, to general surprise, failed to take the court for their scheduled basketball match against Bahrain yesterday, the IOA today confirmed that the men’s and women’s basketball teams would not contest the Games, together with their sepaktakraw and fencing squads.
Doha’s Asian Games Organising Committee announced this morning that they had been advised by the IOA that the withdrawals, received by fax from Delhi, were “due to last minute unavoidable circumstances.” In a report published in the Gulf News, Syed Nasir Ali, manager of the Indian football team for the Games denied statements in the press that they wouldn’t be participating, “We have everything set for the trip and we are going to participate in the soccer tournament at the Asian Games.
"The news that we are not going to Qatar is wrong. We should participate and that is why the team is going to Doha."
| Doha 2006 - India withdraws more teams In fact this was a blow below the belt for IOA as government at the last minute disallowed participation in 8 sports. As per reports (i am looking for the link) the sports are basketball, football, handball, sepaktekraw, volleyball three others i missed.
Also a few sportsmen were not allowed in other sports too where some were sanctioned these sports include cue sports and shooting and athletics.
still the IHF has not announced the official team on indian shores but the official games website has the team announced.
the shoddy state of Indian Sports affairs
The indian government should have been more proactive and announced this very earlier and used the funds were they could have borne fruits.
as the delegation has already landed in Qatar those who are not sactioned will have a free vacation from our taxpayers pockets |

Bunch of fools are running the show and bringing disrepute to our country.
This is foolish and disgusting, whether you win or lose is secondary - the foremost duty of any sportsmen is to participate and give his 100%.
I am shocked & ashamed to no end - this is outrageous

Following yesterday’s announcement that they had withdrawn from men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s sepaktakraw and fencing, today the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) contacted the Doha Asian Games Organising Committee (DAGOC) to request that the sepaktakraw and fencing teams be reinstated.
Today, in a written statement, the Olympic Council of Asia and DAGOC advised that a request from the IOA to re-enter its men’s and women’s sepaktakraw along with a four-member women’s fencing team had been accepted.
India is scheduled to take on Malaysia in sepaktakraw on 2 December and the fencing competition is scheduled to begin on 9 December.
| i dont know about indian womens chances in fencing but sepaktekraw they will be massacred by the thais and malays.
Why this kinda mess happens in Indian Sports, its beyond my understanding. |

We need to overhaul sports administration/management in this country before its too late. |

Move over Bond actor Daniel Craig, Goldfinger is reporting for duty.
Nicknamed Goldfinger – the title of an earlier James Bond film – by the Australian media when honoured as Athlete of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne this year, Samaresh Jung is hoping to gun down the Chinese challenge and that of the rest of the favourites in Doha.
He spies more medals. Jung conspicuously exited Melbourne with five gold, but he knows his next assignment will be much tougher.
China are expected to knock the living daylights out of the rest at the Asian Games as the country uses Doha 2006 as a sighter for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. However, pistol king Jung only has eyes for gold and is hoping he’ll have a licence to thrill in Doha.
“Asian standards are much higher,” the 34 year-old told the Oman Times on Saturday 25 November. “But I am not going to waste time thinking about it, there is no pressure because you don’t shoot against your rivals, it is how you perform yourself that really counts.”
Jung has done well recently. He surpassed the Asian Games record in the centre fire event in the selection trials in Indore. Jung also scored 691.6 in the 10m air pistol event which equalled the Olympic record. However, the performances will not be registered as records because they did not take place at an official event of the International Shooting Sport Federation.
It has not all been good news though. The World No 21 failed to qualify for the World Cup in Spain in October where China’s Tan Zonghang and Wei Pang finished 5th and 8th respectively in the 10m air pistol event.
Four years ago India took two silver medals at the 14th Asian Games in Busan, Korea – a pittance compared to their 16 gold at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year. In contrast, China won 27 out 42 gold on offer in Busan and a similar number of success are likely in the Qatari capital when the shooting starts at Lusail Shooting Complex on 2 December.
But Jung never gives up and thinks that by the end of the Games, he will be the man with the golden gun. |

Table Tennins:
Indian women TableTennis team won one match agains Uzbekistan and then lost to China. They managed to reach quarterfinals but lost out to South Korea tamely. Which was expected considering the world beating status of China and Korea.
Indian mens TableTennis team went even bad, did not register a single win and went out in first round it self.
Badminton :
As i had mentioned earlier in a thread we were paired with China and Indonesia in the group stage and were mauled with identical 5-0 routs in both matches.
Football :
We drew the first match with Hong Kong-China, with score line reading 1-1.
Now, the question is why do we send bloodless athletes and mindless officials to these sports events. I mean its okay to send individual athletes who have fared well in International Areana to events like these, but for the sake of participation we must not participate.
In my opinion, we wasted the resources by sending team entries in TableTennis, Badminton and Football and many other sports. In stead those money should be spent those deserving , promising athletes who have done well in recent past and encourage them to bring more laurels to the country.
In fact i totally agree with Indian Government Decision to disallow the teams from eight disclipines. It should have been intimated very much earlier to the IOA and respective Federations.
Now lets see what brews for the rest of the Indian Athletes there in Doha. Opening Ceremony today at 9.30 IST to be telecast live on DD NATIONAL. | | Want to comment on this thread? Register now and start posting!! | All times are GMT +5.5. The time now is 03:16 AM. |
