14th July The Mumbai Rain - effects

It is sad, all this water will be wasted again, so much of rain, still water problems will continue in India

Mumbai municipal corporation is the worst one according to me, if it rains for only 1day at a stretch then also u will find the pics something like this in kalina area.....

too bad comparatively this year almost there is no rain after that aslo u can se the conditions of roads. then what if the rain starts in its usual nature

no doubt on that these pics r 4yrs old
as this year there were very less rain even compared to last yr
but no doubt we r having very bad management for the water drainage system

No matter what the BMC does mumbai will always get flooded in the rains. The topography of mumbai is such that certain areas like santacruz(milan subway), Hindmata, Kalbadevi, some parts of Colaba, some parts of andheri etc will always be flooded in the rains due to them being low lying areas. So when there is even medium to heavy rainfall these places tend to get flooded soon. I have been witness to them for the past 20+ years of my life, nothing new. Only thing is the media getting hyper about it everytime there is ankle deep water in mumbai.

Maybe some are, but not all of these pics are from 26 july'05. Atleast i saw this very pic on TV on 14th...



And yes, it did get flooded till waist level at many places on 14th.

Anyways, i think, cursing the BMC is gonna be of no use. The topography of mumbai is such that it will get flooded in monsoon during high tide days, no matter what. When the water level at the sea rises above the sewage pipeline levels, all that water has no way else, but to come back into the city..

Storm water drainage system is useless on high tide days. Effectively raising the level of the land in low lying areas is well, impossible. I dont think they have the kind of resources and funds to do that in city as large as Bombay...

All we can do is pray that there are no heavy (and continuous) showers on high tide days.

Anyways, Navi Mumbai is safe because of the hills. No flooding here, no matter how much it rains..
