Otherwise the piston rings will wear down and you will never achieve proper ring seal. Change oil after doing the above for 20 odd kms. Use petroleum oil at first till run in (3000 kms.) After that, may shift to synthetic. Run all the gears throught full rpm range and let the engine break on its on. That will ensure that all the aluminium particulates are weaned off the cyl walls.

Indian cyl walls are iron not aluminium...Al comes off quickly, not iron. thats why longer run in periods. My 5 speed has run 3000KMs and i can still see honing marks. hope that explains

India = Hot, No watercooling. Its fine if you do it on subzero land where engine overheating is never an issue.

ok cool guys.... i never knew so much.... and asking for advice on xbhp is a big ordeal. half the time ppl will keep pulling OT. damn frustrating.

so it is not recommended to red it initially. i figured that myself actually. just wanted to get it confirmed from someone in the know.

ok tell me one thing:

nikhil said he redlines his BIKE easily and frequently. do you guys do the same? If done after run in is it a bike deal? please tell.....

cuz when i approach 6-7k rpm on first gear on ma p150 classic, the engine is no longer as smooth (actually smooth as butter) as it is just 1k rpm short. like it starts vibrating a wee bit. what can be the cause?

also, i got the bike services recently from castrol bike zone here. they made major rehaul of engine (they said it was suprising it was running so well considering the inards of the engine my first bike ) they changed piston rings etc. do i need to run it in again?

it has done about 300kms now. can i red line it? (hope i am not sounding too TBish.... just wanna learn.)

Normally i dont shift till i touch 8.5K RPM ( power drops sharply @ 8750RPM for me ) but...i have fresh rebore run in, new crank, new engine bearings, new con rod and its bearings, new top end bearing blah blah blah hehehe

vibrations...get your crank checked. same case happened with mine. starts vibrating badly @ 7K...revved much more freely with new crank assy.

Major rehaul. what exactly did they do? did u see the worn out parts? could you make differnce b/w worn out n new ones?

new piston rings...run in not needed...bikey pls correct me if i'm wrong

well there is a saying...which means..thee lasts how u use it...
Redining too frequently on our mortal ~200cc bikes is not fair for people like me who woudnt want to spend too much on maintainence..

Well also it can be said...it depends on how u runin the vehicle

@karan : we had a Xman id :sksy_biker from bangy who had runned in in the manner proposed by mototuneusa....i had ridden his bike..& it was smoother...(FYI it was ZMA)...

OT: Xbhp.com used to be a fav site for me somtime bac...but due to publicity ... there are too many noobs there now.... ... all the real guys who formed the site leavin it...due to countless no of craps in the site...

Hey, Bikey.....as usual, an amazing post !!

I want to know a few things....

First of all, during the run-in period, I took a LOT of care....never revved beyond 5K RPM for 1st 1000 kms..... for second 1000 kms, I revved a teeny weeny bit abovce 5K RPM..... Never went above 70 during the second 1000 kms..... In first 1000, never went above 60.....

I hope my bike has been run in properly..... After the run in period of 2000 kms and 2 services were over, I started redlining the engine......

Any more precautions to be followed now ??

And Karan, I never went CLOSE to redlining my bike during the first 2k kms..... I started all that after abt 2.2K kms.....

And yes, even for me, after abt 7-8K RPM, the vibrations do become a minor annoyance (for me it is minor...some people may not like it at all )..... but since I am usually accelerating like crazy, I have to be concentrating on the road and dont pay much attention to the vibrations.....
