In a few months time, Toyota will start manufacturing small cars in India. And when that happens, be prepared for a total shake up of the Indian car market
Toyota have a range of models to suit India. But they are syaing that the model they will produce in India is made exclusively for India.
One thing is for sure. When Toyota decide to enter big in a burgeoning market like India, they will be sure to do their homework well. They would have learnt a valuable lesson after losing a lot fo goodwill and money because of their decision to completely withdraw the Qualis and introduce the Innova at a much higher price, thereby gifting the taxi market to Chevrolet and Tata.
Toyota is in the process of putting up a plant to make 1.5 lakh cars a year. The small car for India may be priced between 4.5lakhs - 6 lakhs.
Toyota's small car is key to its Indian plans. It aims to corner 10% of the market or 2 lakh cars in the next 4 years. Sales of its Corolla sedan have been hit ever since Honda launched its Civic. And Innova hasn't met sales targets.
To cut transport costs, Toyota will lay a railway track connecting its plant to the Mysore-Bangalore railway route. Simultaneously, Toyota is expanding its dealership network so that when its first car rolls out, it would head straight into competition with Maruti and Hyundai.
Some of the models that may come to India in this price range.
The Toyota Yaris
The Toyota Aygo
The Toyota Yaris Sedan
I hope they are able to bring in the Yaris Sedan at that price point. It would be a run away hit
The Aygo is one messed up design. It looks freaking ugly. The Yaris also doesnt look all that great but it is way better than the Aygo for sure
