Roger Federer has withdrawn from tournaments in Tokyo and Shanghai next month in order to "rest, rehabilitate and fully recover from a physically challenging year".

The Swiss star has had a hectic season even by his standards, reaching the finals of all four grand slam events, with victories at the French Open and Wimbledon completing his collection of major titles and seeing him overtake Pete Sampras' record haul of 14 slams.

He also married long-term girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec and in July became a father to twin girls.

Last weekend he helped Switzerland reach the Davis Cup World Group with victory over Italy, and he will now take the whole of October off, missing the Japan Open in two weeks' time and the Shanghai Masters the following week.

Federer told his website, Roger Federer - Homepage "I am disappointed that I have to withdraw from Tokyo and Shanghai as they are two of my favourite cities in the world and the fans have been great to me over the years.

"After consultation with my team and doctors, I decided to take the difficult decision to withdraw from both tournaments so that I can give my body a chance to rest, rehabilitate and fully recover from a physically challenging year."

The 28-year-old, who was surprisingly beaten by Juan Martin Del Potro in the US Open final earlier this month, is due to return to action at his home tournament in Basle at the start of November before finishing his season at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
