India at Boxing World Cup 2008

After the wonderful performance of our boxers at the Olympics, they have carried on with their great form at the Boxing World Cup currently on at Moscow.

There is great news all around for India till now
For India, our all three top medal hopes(who were also medal hopes in Olympics) are in Semi Finals

Akhil Kumar trounced Germany's Schneider Marcel 15-6 in a pool of eight boxers to make it to the semifinals. This win assured him of at least a bronze.

Akhil now faces Beijing Olympic Games silver-medallist Leon Alarcon Yankiel (Cuba) in the semifinal on Dec 13. The Cuban boxer defeated Ikgopoleng Khumiso (Botswana) 7-0 with his closely guarded defence. So will it be difficult to breach the Cuban's defence? "I am not going to spare anybody. Beijing is past and now my entire focus is on the World Cup. I am not going to disappoint my supporters on Friday," said Akhil.


Dinesh Kumar has also outpunched Algeria’s Abdelhafid Benchabla 17-11 to make an entry into the semi-finals.


The news now coming in is that Jitender Kumar has also won his bout 18:6 to reach the semi finals

I hope our boxers keep their form and especially Akhil Kumar who frankly deserves it more than anyone else, just for what his contribution to Indian boxing

Great news indeed! Hope Akhil keeps his focus now, He overconfidence brought his downfall in the Q/F of the Beijing olympics This time he has to be careful. BTW he made a statement that he is participating for the gold medal and that bronze and silver medals are the ones you earn by luck

Bad news guys
Akhil Kumar has lost in the semi finals The match with his cuban counterpart was sensational but in the end finished on a tie (4-4) In the end based on more punches thrown, the Cuban won Akhil will have to contend with a Bronze now


Meanwhile Jitender has lost also. The other two(Lakra and Dinesh) are are in higher categories so little hope there

I don't know what happened with him but i didn't see him in the listed boxers who are fighting.
